Manatee Tour Review – It was worth the trip

Swimming with manatees is an adventure I would like to engage in over and over again. It is something I have wanted to experience all my life. That is why my husband and I had to travel to Crystal River, Florida, to just have a taste of it. And when we finally made it, we were not disappointed. Our tour was a wonderful experience, thanks to Captain Mike’s Swimming with Manatees. Not only was the trip planned perfectly, but we were also able to see and swim with over a dozen manatees. It was incredible! And to top it off, the love and passion for manatees exhibited by the crew and captains at Captain Mike’s made the tour eye-opening and life-changing.

Getting ready

We checked in at Captain Mike’s facility 50 minutes before our scheduled time. Once we arrived, we were directed to a climate controlled changing room to don our wetsuits in readiness for the tour. We spent about 20 minutes in the educational facility, watching an instructional video on how to swim properly with the manatees followed by a video by the U.S. Fish & Wildlife Service. Basically, the regulations governing interaction with manatees are quite strict and well-enforced. You are not allowed to touch manatee or bother them, but just to observe them and float or swim along with them. The videos were simple and vivid, injecting a strong desire for the real experience with the sea cows while also following the rules.

Terrific experience

As we launched our boat in great anticipation for a close and personal interaction with these magnificent creatures, our captain cheered us on with jokes and stories. He made us cherish manatees even more. And after 10 minutes on our boat, we spotted a huge, pregnant manatee floating gracefully on the water. I had to calm myself because it was my first experience. It was an awe-inspiring sight. Our captain helped us get into the water and float next to the manatee. And when she saw us in the water, she started playing with us, following us around as we floated on the surface. It was an amazing and unforgettable experience.

Many manatees

Interacting with the female manatee was just the beginning. More was still to come. Our captain took us to another spot, just a 5-minute ride from her location, where we found four manatees playing close to one another. We got in the water to swim with them and immediately were amazed as one of them lumbered toward us and began to kiss my legs. It was breathtaking! The manatee rolled and rolled, keeping its belly up for us to rub. My two girls and I rubbed her belly and enjoyed seeing the giant at very close range. This is something we had wanted to do and here we were doing it in real time. Incredible!

Wonderful staff

We moved around for another one hour or so and saw many more manatees, about a dozen in total. The crew and captain were very supportive and informative during the trip, helping us with whatever needs we had throughout the tour. They emphasized the rules and reminded us to always treat the animals respectfully. They also gave us the confidence to swim and explained everything beautifully, making our trip stress-free and fun. That is why I recommend Captain Mike’s Swimming with the Manatees for anybody who wants to swim with manatees. Our trip was wonderful and our experience was terrific. It was worth all the money we spent. Swimming with manatees is something I would do again. I hope to come back again and be guided by Captain Mike’s crews.
