Swimming with the manatees in Crystal River, Florida, is a unique, exhilarating and memorable experience. Unlike any other wildlife-watching experience, a swim with the manatees tour allows a close and very personal interaction with the animals. You simply slip into the crystal-clear blue water of Crystal River and find yourself surrounded by several of these slumbering giants, seeing one or more of them rise slowly from the sandy bottom when they notice you floating quietly on the water surface and come straight to kiss your legs or interact with you very closely. It is a wonderful experience, the adventurer’s dream!

How long does it take to swim with the manatees?

Swimming with the manatees takes an average of three hours from start to finish, particularly when it is a group tour. Once you arrive, we help you get suited up with a wetsuit. We offer a variety of wetsuits for both children and adults and in different sizes up to 5X. As a rule, we require all our clients to wear wetsuits when they go snorkeling with manatees because a wetsuit will help you stay warm, buoyant, and enable you to keep your feet on top of the water. A wetsuit also will help you avoid dangling, which often stirs up the bottom of the water and scares the manatees. You can choose to bring other gear if you would like to be more comfortable, but remember snorkeling with manatees occurs in shallow water and does not include diving, so there is no need to bring advanced diving gear.

Watching instructional video

Once you are suited up, we do a short educational presentation to prepare you for a friendly and fruitful interaction with the manatees. You will be able to watch two videos, our instructional video on how to swim with manatees and a video by the U.S. Fishing & Wildlife Service. These videos not only prepare you to swim well with the manatees, but also to swim without interfering with their natural habitats. The time taken to prepare a boat for a swim with manatees tour varies, depending on the number of people going on a tour. It takes longer to prepare boats for larger groups and less time for smaller groups. It is therefore important to arrive early for your trip so that your boat gets out on the water as scheduled.

Getting out on the water

After the videos, those taking the tour will have knowledgeable, experienced and friendly captains to guide them out on the water. At Captain Mike’s, a manatee tour is a wonderful experience.
