Snorkeling can open new views of the world underwater. One of the best experiences for visitors to Florida is being able to swim and snorkel with manatees.

What are manatees?

Manatees, also referred to as sea cows, are large aquatic mammals. They are slow of movement and gentle and passive in temperament. They feed on fresh water vegetation and sea grass. Most importantly, they prefer a warm environment and that is why they are commonly found in the waters of the Florida coast, especially in Where and when to snorkel with manatees

The primary location for finding manatees is Citrus County, Florida. Though manatees may be found in many other areas in Florida, Citrus County is the only place in the state where you can legally swim with manatees. In Citrus County, the best places to go swimming and snorkeling with manatees are:

1. Crystal River. This is home to King’s Bay, where the largest gathering of manatees can be found. There are guided tours, equipment to rent and places to stay in the area.

2. Homosassa. The Blue Springs are located in Homosassa which attract an impressive population of manatees as well.

The best time to go swimming and snorkeling with manatees is in the winter, primarily January and February, because then the population is at its highest as manatees from all over escape to the warm waters of Florida.

What not to do when swimming with manatees.

Manatees are endangered mammals, protected under both the Endangered Species Act and the Marine Mammal Protection Act. They are also very passive, so you need to follow these rules:

1. Do not approach, disturb or corner the manatee
2. Do not climb, stand on, ride or dive onto a manatee
3. Do not poke or injure a manatee
4. Do not feed a manatee

The general rule when interacting with manatees is to practice passive observation from a distance.
